Nelson's Big day in the Sun

Last week a number of kids from Year 4 joined with the senior school to go and watch the rugby re-enactment game between Nelson and Nelson College at Botanics. It was a truly festive day with stilt walkers, halftime gymnasts and staged fights and streakers. The game itself (played using original rules) wasn't much to write home about, but it was just great to be there as history was remade.

Unexpected Italian surprise

On Wednesday last week the kids of HSS were treated to a surprise training session by the Italian RWC team. They were holding a public training session up at Nelson College so we felt it would be rude not to take advantage of the opportunity. The players did a series of stretches and ball drills. It was awesome to be able to watch a professional team train so close to school. Everybody enjoyed the experience, especially the female teachers!! We'd never seen Miss Bidlake so happy!

Like sister, like brother!

Just like sister Flora last year, Leo Secker (in disquise) wowed the judges at HSS's Got Talent last week. His amazing skill on the piano earned him second place in this years final. An awesome effort Leo - WELL DONE!! You should be proud of your efforts.

Middle Syndicate's trip to Trafalgar Park

Yesterday the Middle Syndicate visited Trafalgar Park to check out what has been done to prepare it for the upcoming Rugby World Cup (only 8 days!!!!). Ian from the NCC showed us around in his new RWC volunteers uniform. WE looked in the pavillion which was still being painted for the teams, went to the top of the new stadium and played on the grass pitch. Did you know that it has ground up recycled glass under the layer of grass - cool aye!!

Noise Crew fail to inspire Makos victory!

The HSS noise crew had a fantastic afternoon cheering on the Tasman Makos on sunday against Otago. Unfortunately it wasn't enough as the Otago boys snuck a dodgy last minute penalty to win 19-16!! The noise crew acquitted themselves well, even being asked to calm down by security. Better luck next time team!

Lets get it $tarted!!

On Friday R18 presented their annual assembly item. This year with the RWC coming up we thought that this would be our focus. Neisha and Leo did a great job keeping the performance flowing, while Maccrae and Pia made super gameshow presenters - look out Jason Gunn and Ryan Seacreast!! Predictable the kids dominated the teachers in the RWC Mastermind and all our tryscorers would put Quade Cooper and Digby Iione to shame with their creative trscoring celebrations. An awesome effort all round - well done guys!!! I'm proud of you!

Graces big day!

The last day of term proved to be a great one for Grace. After her catapult won the syndicate competition she was then judged to have taken the top photo in the first ever HSS photo competition. She then rounded the day off by receiving a merit award at final assembly. Well done Grace!!

Its all on in the Middle Syndicate!!

Can you tell which house had the fiercest battle cry in our syndicate battle? Van Diemen in the yellow! Mr O Reagan's extension science group showed us the trebuchets they had been making before demonstating their 3/4 life-size ones awesome power!! Look out below!

Room 18 'Hard on the Heels' of the Rugby World Cup

On Wednesday R18 popped down to the museum to check out the photography exhibition by Peter Bush. It was great to learn a little about taking photos from a real master of his craft...not you JP! Thanks to Nicki for running the program and Dennis, Helen, Gabrielle and Anne-Marie for helping out on the day.

SLOW DOWN!! Keep to the Speed Limit!

To finish the week the children from the Middle and Senior school walked down to Nelson Intermediate to waltch a road safety demonstration. Children were able to observe first hand what driving just 10km over the speed limit has on the ability to stop quickly. A sombre reminder about being safe on our busy roads.
