Nelson Envirocentre

Today we wandered up to the Nelson Envirocentre behind Nelson College to check out what went on up there.  We saw a huge solar oven (no pancakes sorry), a biodome, an outdoor classroom and a greenhouse made of plastic bottles.  Check out the broken glass footpath we are walking on - not a place to go in bare feet!

Yay...its swimming time again!!

AMAZING OLYMPICS ITEM

Last Friday R18 and R9 did an assembly item in HSS hall about the Olympics for their class topic.  The item started off with a Photostory about the ancient Olympics.  Every boy took their tops off and did poses of themselves.  No girls were aloud unless they were from a certain country.  The commentators were Izzy acting as Melody Robinson and Tom as Keith Quinn.

After that they had the parade of nations, starting with Greece and ending with Great Britain, the hosts for this year.  Each country would come through the isle and up onto the stage in alphabetical order.  Then they sang Adele 'Set Fire to the Rain' pretending that Adele had come to the opening ceremony.

Following that, Miss Hobbs came up on stage and lit the Olympic flame.  Next the Olympic oath was read by Miss Wills.  The oath is a promise to play fairly, to not take drugs and to do their very best.

Finally the teachers and their trusty side-kick did the Principal awards.  That item was really showing London how to do it!

Kiwiana madness!

Last Friday it was Kiwiana Day. For the last two weeks we have had a homework project to make and decorate kiwi things. The categories  were D.I.Y sculptures, Super sewing, decorate a cupcake, make a sand saucer, fruit and vege sculpture and decorate a jandal or gumboot. These things were to put into the competitions in the  hall. We all had to enter 2 of them.  In the afternoon there was 4 kiwi activities that each of the houses went to. The activities were Gumboot Throwing, Jump Jam, the rugby relay and having a look at all the amazing creations that everyone had made. My favourite was Gumboot Throwing because you got lots of goes and it was my first time doing it. For the competitions if you got in the top 3  you got points for your house. I am in Van Diemen. The points ended up as Van Diemen & Waimea with 9 points, Hampden  with  14 points and Ngatiawa with 22 points. Kiwiana Day was fun!

The Best Day Ever!

I love Cross Country!   But I felt nervous on the day. I don't know why, but I just did. Mr F told us to line up outside. All of the other classes were there too.  When we got to Fairfield Park, I felt a shiver down my spine.  I saw my Mum with my annoying sister.  Mr F Told us to sit on tarpaulins.  I was really nervous when it got close to the year 4 girls race.  Mr F suddenly shouted''Year 4 girls go line up at the starting line.''
I got up. Then I went over. When we all got there,Miss Pilcher asked if we were ready.Everybody answered ''YES!'' but I Didn't. Finally she said 3  important words.''Ready, Set,GO!'' We raced off. At first there was a good downhill bit. But... there was a big uphill bit after that! I was so disappointed.  But I managed to get up there. Finally,we  had to go through the forest.  Demi was just in front of me. She was panting. I managed to just go in front of her. In the end,Tatiana came first as usual. I came 2nd,but that wasn't bad. Millie got to carry my sister. In the open race,it was the same but a little bit longer. I came 8th.  Awesome! My  house came first!

ANZAC Yum yums!

For ANZAC Day we made ANZAC biscuits!  All was going well until they hit the oven - approximate measuring proved the downfall with them going as flat as the Canterbury Plains.  As you can see though, they still got the thumbs up taste wise...mostly!
